LEED™ing the way for a greener tomorrow

SKW is providing professional services to build Bell Prairie Elementary, a new LEED™ certified elementary school.  Jason’s presentation focused on the LEED™ Sustainable Sites and Water Efficiency credits, and complimented the other presentations made by the architect (Hollis & Miller), the MEP (Henderson Engineers), the Contractor (JE Dunn), and the Owner (North Kansas City School District No. 74).  The curriculum development will account for one of the Innovation & Design credits being pursued for the LEED™ v2.2 Building Certification.  Environmental features of the school will include a green roof, a stormwater cistern integrated into the building architecture, a windmill driven pump to irrigate the green roof with the harvested rainwater from the cistern, three bioretention basins, a preserved streamway and riparian corridor, and native prairie grass plantings.  The school is expected to open in August 2009.
