Fulton Water Tower Gets Second Life
Originally constructed in 1962, the south water tower provided Fulton with water service for more than 40 years. In 2006, Fulton added two higher water towers on the north and west sides of the city to increase water pressure throughout town, which rendered the south tower inactive. Working closely with the City Council and staff, SKW proposed a design/build project to raise the single-pedestal elevated water tank 48 ft., 6 in. so the tower would match the heights of the existing towers, balancing the pressure so the tower could once again be functional.
The design/build methodology allowed SKW and the contractor to work together throughout design and construction, maximizing the coordination effort. SKW, acting as designer and construction manager, prepared engineering plans and arranged for necessary clearances and permits from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and other state and federal agencies. Construction was performed by specialty tank contractor Phoenix Fabricators and Erectors of Avon, Indiana.
With the tower section welded into place, the contractor will clean, blast and repaint the interior and exterior surfaces. The tank plumbing and equipment in the base cone of the tower are also to be replaced to allow better operational flexibility and improve water quality. Contact
