Funding Programs Help Develop Projects

By Jerry Johnson, P.E., LEED AP
Principal, Manager-Infrastructure Services

johnson gc-dressFor the bridge program, local agencies look for hydraulic and structural adequacy of bridges on public roads within their jurisdiction (off of the state system). The typical project evaluates a bridge where definite problems exist and our service provides inspection, analysis and recommendations to address deficiencies found. The report allows the local public agencies to program maintenance, repair or replacement projects.

For the traffic program, local agencies identify concerns where the safe and efficient flow of traffic including safety of pedestrians and bicyclists might be compromised. The program also covers public roads within their jurisdiction (off of the state system). Our traffic engineers conduct traffic studies to determine effective solutions to resolve the concern. The traffic study also allows the local public agencies to program maintenance, repair or new improvement projects.

Funding grants for Transportation Enhancement Programs (TEP) and Safe Routes to Schools (SRTS) are also available. On these programs the local public agency prepares and submits an application for funding eligible projects which address established criteria and project goals. These programs recently targeted bicycle and pedestrian facilities. The limited amount of funds available makes these grants competitive between communities.

SKW is an approved BEAP and TEAP consultant and is experienced in providing services through the TEP and SRTS programs.
