SKW Teams Up to Smoke Out Hunger

canstruction 2011-4 pack"Smokin’ Out Hunger” is what the team of SKW and the interior design students from Park University named our submission in the annual Canstruction competition aimed at battling hunger in the Kansas City area.

Canstruction, which kicked off Wednesday, January 12, in the Ward Parkway Mall, is a design/build competition that allows teams of engineers, architects, and contractors to build fantastic structures designed entirely out of canned foods. The structures showcase the ingenuity and creativity of Kansas City’s design community and are judged in a variety of categories.  The competition benefits Harvesters Community Food Network.

This is a first-time effort for the joint venture between SKW and Park University. “Harvesters is an important organization to our firm and our community,” says SKW President, Ron Petering.  “When we learned of the student’s desire to participate, we were glad to offer our company’s talents and resources in effort to make that happen.”

The SKW/Park University team designed the ultimate rib plate in honor of our area’s well-known specialty. Complete with barbeque ribs, French fries, coleslaw, a pickle and a bottle of sauce, the entry features 2,720 cans of food.

Attached are several pictures of our team working on the structure. We invite you to visit Ward Parkway Mall between now and February 9, to see the entries for yourself. You can also vote for your favorite structure for $1 per vote on the Harvesters website. Once the displays have been disassembled, the canned goods will be delivered to area food pantries supplied by Harvesters.
