SKW Plays Key Role in MoDOT Realtime Network
The Missouri Department of Transportation announced the completion of the 78 Station Network of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Continuously Operating Reference Stations (CORS). SKW partnered with MoDOT to help create the Real Time Network which operates 24 hours a day to provide GNSS positional data, which is frequently used within the design and construction industries to verify location. The Missouri RTN CORS covers the entire state of Missouri including the Kansas City metropolitan area.
Through SKW’s partnership with MoDOT, the firm has become one of only two Kansas locations to host a network station. The CORS stations are typically constructed with concrete pedestals going 10 feet into the ground. SKW’s station is tightly secured on the rooftop of the Lenexa office. The CORS stations are positioned using existing National Geodetic Survey (NGS) CORS stations and several MoDOT stations are already part of the NGS National CORS.
SKW’s history with locational data dates back to a small surveying firm founded over 100 years ago and continues to be the firm’s benchmark service offering. Field Services Manager, Larry Graham calls SKW’s agreement to join the MoDOT network a natural fit. “This is a win-win situation,” says Graham “the network is strenghened by partners like us to help cover the western edge of the state and we apprecaite the opportunity to significantly improve the availbility of positional data.”
The Missouri RTN CORS supports the infrastructure needs of professionals including engineers, surveyors, mapping GIS, utilities, construction and heavy highway, environmental and agriculture businesses. The data is available at no charge to registered users with a user name and password. To obtain access to the system, visit the MoDOT GNSS Web server at http://gpsweb.modot.mo.gov/.”
