Creating Successful Partnerships through Energy Expansion
The U.S. energy sector is a growing and vital industry. In the current environment, getting ample supplies of crude oil, natural gas, and natural gas liquids (NGL’s) to market requires the construction of new pipelines – and pipeline construction means a large temporary workforce in a community. Often, these economic development opportunities, though exciting and beneficial, create unanticipated stress on public works systems. The impacts may range from additional traffic within concentrated areas, to a greater need for basic services such as food and lodging, to an increased demand for utility, law enforcement and emergency services. When managed, impacts on the local economy are positive – if proactive, the increase in demand for basic needs can be capitalized on by the local business economy. Together, local governments and energy companies seek to minimize the negative impacts and find favorable outcomes for each community affected through proactive planning. Adoption of industry standards also plays a big part in proactive planning, as it gives the public entity a common set of standards on which to base decisions. This establishes fair and equitable requirements for the energy and utility companies and leads to a successful partnership for all parties.
SKW has been playing a very fulfilling role in many ways, particularly as the Midwest has been developing and delivering its energy resources to market. We would like to share our many years of experience in forging good relationships on energy development projects and community building initiatives with counties and cities that may soon be experiencing the local impacts of construction within the energy sector. Capstone Awards Recognize Industry Achievements
Crowning achievements in real estate were recently honored at the 2013 Capstone Awards Luncheon sponsored by the Kansas City Business Journal. The event recognized the projects and organizations that have enhanced the Kansas City area over the past year. SKW is proud to have contributed to six of the award winning projects.
On-Call Consulting . . . Is it Right for You?
Many public entities have consolidated costs by hiring consultants in an as-needed or on-call capacity. With a single request for qualification/ proposal/interview/contracting process, they can select one or more consultants and reduce the need to have a similar process for every new project in a given period of time. SKW is an experienced on-call consultant that has both an understanding of the challenges facing infrastructure and development, and the in-house capabilities to address each challenge. Having had the opportunity to serve over 45 public entities on an on-call basis, SKW has been able to respond to projects with widely varying levels of size and complexity. Throughout this experience, we have gained an excellent understanding of the policies and procedures that must be followed as part of an open-ended service plan.
Through the first four months of 2013, SKW was awarded on-call contracts in Cass County, Missouri adn the cities of Mexico, Missouri, and Roeland Park and Shawnee in Kansas. We continue to actively provide multi-disciplinary services to our existing on-call clients including Riverside, Moberly, Platte City and Excelsior Springs, in Missouri and Edwardsville and Lenexa in Kansas. In addition to these public clients, we provide similar services to many private sector clients through our multiple service lines. Often called master services agreements (MSA) in the private sector, SKW has recently signed MSAs with Associated Wholesale Grocers, URS Corporation and many others.
On-call consultants must establish and follow a consistent project management program throughout the life of the agreement. SKW’s approach to on-call engineering project management is structured to provide both a primary contact and a secondary contact, each of whom is capable of addressing project needs and provides a clear invoicing and task order tracking structure to make working with us as easy and convenient as possible. This organizational structure is designed to provide you with timely responses from experienced staff and allows our clients maximum flexibility to utilize our multi-discipline firm through a scope of work written to meet the needs for each project. We at SKW are fortunate to have experienced and responsive staff to perform these services for our clients and projects in each of our market sectors.

Easy as Cherry Pi Entry Earns "Best Meal"
Our “Easy as Cherry Pi” creation won “Best Meal” at CANstruction this year! We are proud to be part of such a great event for Harvesters – The Community Food Network. Our team raised $3571, which translates to a donation of 3,316 meals.

Easy as Cherry Pi
Assisting those in need is part of our community responsibility. Shafer, Kline & Warren, Inc. is proud to demonstrate that lending a hand is something we can all do – it’s as Easy as Cherry Pi.
We’re engineers and land surveyors, so of course we love Pi and Pie. Pi, expressed as the number 3.14, is a mathematical constant commonly known to have no end. 
The pun reminds us that our community responsibility to help those in need also has no end. Harvesters needs our constant support to keep fighting the battle against hunger.
This eight-foot cherry pie is comprised of a filling made of tomato sauce with pork and beans, a kidney bean crust, a lattice work of egg noodles and topped with a dollop of tuna. Dig inside and you’ll find a surprise corn and green bean interior. Our entry donates over 4000 pounds of food and 3,316 meals to Harvesters.
