Follow the link below to the original article, which was picked up by the Associated Press. Versions appeared in publications ranging from the Kansas City STAR to USA Today. SKW Energy Services is providing turn-key engineering for the now nationally-recognized project.
Services include engineering design, air permit preparation/coordination, equipment specification and procurement, coordination with the landfill owner and electric utility, preparation of construction bid packages, construction oversight, and commissioning. Two 1.6 megawatt landfill gas generator units will be run by Caterpillar G3520C engines that will combust methane after its treatment by a fuel-gas skid. A SCADA system will allow the plant to operate unmanned, transmitting power to a 69 KV substation, while providing multiple safeguards against feeding power into a grid fault.
The plant is expected to generate 3.2 Megawatts of power when it comes on line later this year with the two initial generators, and 8 MW within ten years to generate full design capacity. The remaining three generators are expected to be phased in over the next few years based on methane availability from the landfill.
