De Soto, KS SKW was selected by the City of De Soto to provide surveying and engineering services for a drainage and recreation path improvement project along an unnamed tributary to Kill Creek in De Soto, KS. The project was a cooperative effort between the City of De Soto and the Johnson County Park and Recreation District, but the City performed the administration of the design and construction. The trail established a connection between several De Soto facilities including the city park, ball fields, the city pool and downtown businesses. The project included the reconstruction of approximately 1,840 l.f. of open channel drainage and the construction of approximately 3,000 l.f. of a new asphalt recreation path. SKW was responsible for survey, hydraulics and open channel drainage design, recreation path design, permitting, and construction documents.
The drainage improvement provided for the safe conveyance of stormwater, providing protection for adjacent homes for the 100-year storm, while stabilizing the streambed and bank that provided the homeowners and the City the beneficial use of their property and reduction in maintenance. Utilizing a planting program with the streambed and bank stabilization, a buffer was realized next to the adjacent residential and industrial properties. Taking advantage of the region's unique characteristics and its diverse landscape, the 0.5 mile of trail provides users a mechanism for recreation and a link with the nearby path adjacent to Kill Creek. Construction was completed in 2006. |
