Wastewater Treatment Facility Improvements

Parkville, MO

As the Acting City Engineer for the City of Parkville, MO, SKW provided engineering services to address their needs for wastewater system improvements.  SKW prepared a Sewer Facility Plan involving a sanitary sewer evaluation, rate study, and evaluations of the wastewater treatment plant, pump station, and forcemain.  As part of the facility plan, SKW developed and analyzed several options to improve the capacity and performance of the wastewater treatment plant.  The City had been operating a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) plant for the treatment of their wastewater.  The SBR plant was experiencing capacity problems during peak weather flows as well as process problems.  The most cost effective option was to convert the SBR plant into a continuous flow activated sludge system.  SKW completed the design and provided construction administration and inspection services.

The new treatment process converted the existing SBR basins into activated sludge tanks utilizing the existing jet aeration system and blowers for aeration.  Two new circular clarifiers were constructed with a common sludge pump station between the two clarifiers.  SKW also designed additional features to the plant to allow for the future addition of a UV disinfection system.

The project was bid and constructed on budget and on schedule in a 12 month period.  The treatment plant has performed well producing effluent with average BOD/TSS/NH3 levels below 25/30/2.4 mg/L.
