Atchison, KS SKW provided structural, mechanical and electrical engineering services to design and construct two steel frame facilities for Midwest Grain Products (MGP) in Atchison, KS. The first building, MGP's technical center, is two stories and approximately 19,000 s.f. This facility consists of multiple laboratories, offices and conference rooms. The second building is three stories, approximately 19,000 s.f., and serves as the new corporate headquarters. Both buildings are framed with structural steel beams and columns. The roof systems are a metal deck with steel bar joists bearing on steel beams. The second floor framing systems are concrete on composite steel deck and composite steel beams. The lateral load resistance is provided by reinforced concrete shear walls. In the corporate headquarters building, there is one moment resisting steel frame using the strength and stiffness of the beams and girders to supplement the reinforced concrete shear walls. The exterior walls of the buildings are brick veneer with steel stud supports. Due to poor soil conditions, GeoPiers were installed to allow spread footings to be used instead of more expensive deep foundations. In the technical center building, the labs have laboratory hoods piped with gas, compressed air, vacuum, oxygen, and nitrogen. Selected laboratories are designed with commercial kitchen exhaust hoods, fans and makeup units. SKW prepared plans for the HVAC system consisting of three rooftop units with VAV boxes and reheat coils, while the plumbing system consists of core restrooms with multiple sinks in the various laboratories. Grease interceptors serve the scullery sinks. Acid neutralization tanks serve the cup sinks at the laboratories. The lighting is a combination of fluorescent 2' x 4' fixtures and incandescent can fixtures to meet the facilities architectural requirements. The building has power available at 480V, 240V, 208V and 120 V to serve the various laboratory equipment. A natural gas generator serves the emergency panels in the IT rooms. The entire building is accessible with an elevator serving both floors and restrooms that meet ADA requirements.
