De Soto USD 232 Baseball & Softball Complex

Shawnee, KS

The De Soto Unified School District 232 and the 3 & 2 Baseball Club of Johnson County, Inc. joined together to develop a new District Activity Complex located on approximately 24 acres of the 64 acre, 3 & 2 Baseball Complex at the corner of 81st Street and Monticello Terrace in Shawnee, KS.  The joint project led to the construction of four remaining fields (two baseball and two softball) to complete the 16 field complex.  The De Soto School District uses the fields during the school's spring baseball/softball season, while the 3 & 2 Baseball Club maintains and uses the fields during the remaining part of the spring and summer months.

The project included parking for 300 cars, restroom/concession building, ticket booth and a 5,000 s.f. maintenance building.  Working with the architect, SKW provided plans for grading, storm drainage, sanitary sewers, private water lines, stormwater detention, landscaping and irrigation for the development of this site.  In addition to those efforts, SKW also designed plans for the extension of Monticello Terrace, north from 83rd Street for approximately 0.25 miles.

A unique feature to this site is the fact that a 100' wide power easement extends through the property from northwest to southeast and a 150' gas line easement extends through the property from northeast to southwest.  These easements required special design considerations to insure playing fields were located outside of the easement corridors and the correct placement of parking spaces and field lighting, which were required for the complex.  SKW revised storm sewer profiles to go over or under pipelines and revised street profiles to provide a minimum of 48" of cover over the pipelines.
