Richard F. Owen Family Tennis Complex

Mission Woods, KS

Through a generous gift from the Richard Owen family, six tennis courts were built to competition standards (next to two soccer practice fields) on the Pembroke Hill Kroh campus.  SKW was selected to prepare the conceptual plan for the court layout, related walks and retaining walls.  With extreme slopes to the south, north and east of the proposed tennis complex, the site presented several spatial and topographical challenges.  SKW sought a design that met city requirements and provided adequate space to accommodate six tennis courts, but with minimum disturbance to existing, mature shade trees.  Additional trees (a mix of evergreen and shade trees) were added to the landscape plan to bolster the west vegetated buffer from an adjacent residential neighborhood.  In addition to landscape architecture, the plan included grading, erosion control, layout and construction details.  SKW also worked with government officials to obtain local and state permits and completed a KDHE Land Disturbance Permit.   Construction on the project was completed in summer 2006.
